MARK ROTHKO (1903-1970), ATTRIBUTED TO, OIL ON CANVAS

Dimensions:

100 x 80 cm. All measured values are approximate.

Provenance and Authenticity:

This painting is presented in the manner and style associated with Mark Rothko, one of the most influential figures of American Abstract Expressionism and a leading pioneer of Color Field painting. The work reflects Rothko's celebrated exploration of expansive color relationships, atmospheric fields, and emotional depth through simplified geometric forms. Executed in oil on canvas, the composition demonstrates visual characteristics associated with Rothko's mature works, including soft-edged rectangular forms, layered pigments, and a meditative approach to color and space.

Signature:

Mark Rothko

Description:

The composition presents a vertical arrangement of luminous color fields dominated by warm tones of orange, yellow, and soft cream. Broad rectangular areas appear suspended within the canvas, with subtle transitions between layers creating a sense of depth, vibration, and atmospheric movement. The restrained structure and carefully balanced palette invite contemplation, allowing color itself to become the primary subject of the work. The painting reflects Rothko's pursuit of emotional expression through pure color, light, and spatial harmony.

Historical significance:

Mark Rothko's Color Field paintings transformed the possibilities of abstract art by shifting attention away from representation and toward the psychological and emotional impact of color. His large-scale compositions, characterized by floating color blocks and luminous surfaces, became defining examples of postwar American abstraction. Rothko's works remain highly influential within twentieth-century art history and continue to represent a major area of international collecting.

Valuation:

Works associated with Mark Rothko occupy a distinguished position in the international art market due to their profound influence on modern abstraction and their recognizable visual language. Paintings featuring his characteristic color-field approach, especially those with harmonious tonal relationships and large-scale compositions, remain highly sought after by museums and collectors worldwide.
