Desirable Early Production Winchester Second Model 1876 "Centennial" Lever Action Rifle with "Thumbprint" Dust Cover Manufactured in 1877, just one year after initially being introduced to the public at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition as Winchester's powerful new "Centennial" rifle. These 1876s were essentially a scaled up version of the company's iconic Model 1873, which was already earning itself a reputation in the American West. The larger Model 1876 was capable of handling larger and more powerful cartridges, making it the ideal choice for anyone that felt .44-40 W.C.F. was not enough firepower for the dangers they might face on the frontier. This particular example has the Second Model receiver with the dust cover guide retained with two screws and dust cover with the flush-checkered "thumbprint" grip area. George Madis, noted Winchester authority stated that the first recorded Model 1876 fitted with a dust cover was serial number 1682, just 72 digits ahead of this example. The top of the barrel is marked with the standard two-line address and King's patent marking, and the rifle correctly lacks caliber markings as the only caliber initially offered was .45-75 W.C.F. The upper tang is marked with the model designation while the serial number is on the lower tang. It is fitted with a No. 21 German silver blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a trapdoor crescent buttplate.
