GENERALS MATTHEW RIDGWAY, JAMES GAVIN AND WILLIAM P. YARBOROUGH
Great multi-general signed book 'Drop Zone Sicily' by William B. Breur (Novato, Ca.: Presidio Press), 1983. 212pp. 8vo. in black cloth, with dust wrapper. The half-title page is signed by Gen. WILLIAM P. YARBOROUGH (1912-2005), a senior United States Army officer. Yarborough designed the U.S. Army's parachutist badge, paratrooper or 'jump' boots, and the M42 airborne jump uniform. He is known as the 'Father of the Modern Green Berets.' The title page is signed at the top by Gen. MATTHEW RIDGWAY (1895–1993), Supreme Allied Commander Europe (1952–1953), the first Commanding General (CG) of the 82nd Airborne Division, leading it in action in Sicily, Italy and Normandy, before taking command of the newly formed XVIII Airborne Corps in August 1944. He held the latter post until the end of the war in mid-1945, commanding the corps in the Battle of the Bulge, Operation Varsity and the Western Allied invasion of Germany, and by Gen. JAMES GAVIN (1907-1990), the third Commanding General (CG) of the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II. During the war, he was often referred to as 'The Jumping General' because of his practice of taking part in combat jumps with the paratroopers under his command; he was the only American general officer to make four combat jumps in the war. Within the book, YARBOROUGH, RIDGWAY, and GAVIN have each signed individual wartime portraits of themselves. Fine condition.
