GEOFFREY KEYES ATTENDS PATTONS BIRTHDAY
GEOFFREY KEYES (1888-1967) Highly decorated Lieutenant General who commanded the II Corps during World War II. Keyes was George Patton's invaluable chief of staff, leading Patton's I Corps in Morocco, and accepting the surrender of Palermo. Pair of A.L.S.s 'Geoff' with transmittal envelopes bearing his full name in address area and 'Lt. Gen. G. Keyes' in return address, 9pp. 8vo. (total), [n.p., likely Berlin], Oct. 10 and Nov. 12, 1945. Generally family and routine military content wit a few interesting passages, including: '...I drove to Bad Nauheim...to attend Gen. Patton's Birthday Party and it was a huge success. There must have been about 50 guests and about 15 were in the old Western Task Force [Patton's force which took Casablanca] which 3 years ago same date concluded the armistice with the French and Fedala. Among others were Gray, Harkins, Cannon and Kenner. Gen Patton remarked that as of yesterday the majority of the top spots in this theatre are held by original members of the Western Task Force. He is temporarily in command while Eisenhower is home. Truscott and I have two armies 3d & 7th, Cannon is head of the Air Force and Kenner is Theatre Surgeon...' Three weeks later, Patton would break his neck in a car accident. Other content includes Keyes' trip to a displaced persons' camp, visiting the 84th Division, etc. Very good. Sold with three small candid photographs of Keyes during the war. Originates directly from Keyes' estate
