  • Provenance: ARTIST PROFILE: Jorge Enrique Fregoso Torres (Mexican, 1953–2024) was a multidisciplinary Mexican artist, architect, and academic based in Guadalajara. He worked across a remarkable range of creative fields, serving as architect, painter, sculptor, photographer, illustrator, cartoonist, designer, researcher, writer, and musician. A graduate of the Faculty of Architecture at the Universidad de Guadalajara, he began teaching at the university's newly formed Facultad de Diseno in 1979, going on to spend four decades as a professor at the Centro Universitario de Arte, Arquitectura y Diseno (CUAAD), where he became known for using design education as a vehicle to explore philosophy and the understanding of life across generations of students. He held a doctorate in City, Territory, and Sustainability, and in recognition of his teaching career received the Premio Nacional a la Docencia Superior en el Diseno Grafico (National Award for Higher Education in Graphic Design), presented by the Asociación Mexicana de Escuelas de Diseno Gráfico Encuadre in a ceremony at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. Beyond the classroom, he was known as a painter and illustrator with a romantic vision of the most iconic urban spaces of cities, which he rendered through various illustration techniques, and he also authored books on architectural theory and the art of caricature.
