Rare and Desirable Montana Armory, Bozeman, Montana, Marked Olive Patent Holster and Gun Belt Manufactured c. the 1880s to 1890s, this is a fine example of a rarely scene Montana Armory Olive Patent "Mexican Loop" holster and cartridge belt produced in Bozeman, Montana. The Montana Armory is known as having been a gun depot/retailer in Bozeman at least as early as the 1880s, and they are known to have stamped their mark on various firearms as well as gun leather like this example. The Olive patent holster was a favorite on the western frontier and featured a lighter weight oval skirt, deep throat, and typically pigskin lining. Examples of these Olive patent revolvers can be seen in both "Old West Antiques & Collectibles" as well as "Packing Iron: Gunleather of the Frontier West" by Rattenbury. The holster itself has attractive floral and border tooling, the maker's mark on the body above the top of two retention bands, and can accommodate a Colt Single Action Army revolver with a 5 1/2 inch or 7 1/2 inch barrel. The cartridge belt is also marked for Montana Armory and has a single row of cartridge loops that appear to accommodate up to .45 caliber cartridges. The belt measures approximately 42 inches overall and has a nickeled buckle.

  • Provenance: The Bill Welch Collection
  • Condition: Very good showing the character of a frontier holster rig, with the muzzle of a revolver having worn through the toe, trace remnants of the original lining, the hook section of the belt is slightly narrowed, and an attractively aged well-worn appearance overall. This late 19th century Montana holster rig that undoubtedly carried a Single Action Army revolver would make a rare and authentic addition to your Colt Single Action collection or collection of the American West!
