Japan, ca. 19th century CE. Carved wood Buddha, holding a bottle in his hand, probably depicting Yakushi Nyorai, known in English as the Medicine Buddha. The bottle in most Japanese Buddhist art and sculptures, Yakushi Nyorai cradles is a small, lidded medicine jar, flask, or bottle (yakutsubo) in his left hand, which rests calmly on his lap. The Symbolism: The bottle contains divine spiritual medicine. In Japanese Buddhism, this represents the cure for physical and mental illnesses, as well as the "medicine" of the Buddha's teachings (Dharma) to eliminate ignorance and suffering. Hand Gestures: While his left hand holds the bottle, his right hand is lowered in a welcoming, wish-granting gesture (Varada Mudra). Wearing a crown having a tall finial. Sitting on a lacquer ware lotus flower base, and on a low pedestal base. Some remaining traces of gilt highlights on the lotus base. 7.75" H × 4.75" W (19.69 cm H × 12.07 cm W).

Provenance: Collection of Tom Carson, NYS., active 1970’s - early 2000’s, then by descent to family.
