East Asia, Japan, Meiji to Showa period, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A Japanese hanging scroll painting depicting three travelers on horseback ascending a misty mountain path. Executed in ink with light washes of color, the scene shows fog swirling around the riders as the peak ahead fades into pale brushwork. The riders wear robes and broad sedge hats, their ascent suggesting pilgrimage or poetic retreat.
The painting is mounted in green silk brocade with gold accents and bears the artist's signature and red seal, identifying the work as that of Koichi Ei or Hirokazu Ei. Size of painting: 52.6" L x 13" W (133.6 cm x 33 cm); of unrolled scroll: 78.3" L x 20" W (198.9 cm x 50.8 cm); of scroll box: 21.3" L x 2.9" W x 2.9" H (54.1 cm x 7.4 cm x 7.4 cm)

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, acquired between 1960 - 1990
