J. Gumpf Signed Flintlock American Long Rifle The top of the barrel is signed "J + Gumpf". Jacob Gumpf (1787-1847) was part of the extensive Gumpf family of gunsmiths active in and around Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Very little of Jacob Gumpf's work survives today. Jacob Fordney Jr. was Gumpf's former apprentice, and surviving examples of his work show similarities. This rifle's patch box is also very similar to the rifle by Melchoir Fordney, Jacob's brother, on page 133 of "Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifles in Its Golden Age" by Kindig. The curly maple stock has 8 silver wedge escutcheons, a silver thumb plate, and silver cheek piece plate and is not carved as has been seen on other surviving Gumpf rifles. It is equipped with a Dreppert flintlock with light floral accents. Three unclear marks appear on the left barrel flat at the breech partially obscured by the stock. The Dreppert gun locks were made in Lancaster and thus are particular common on rifles from the region. Manufacturer: Kentucky Model: Flintlock BBL: 44 inch octagon Stock: maple Gauge: 40 Finish: brown Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Good as reconverted to flintlock. The barrel has mottled brown patina and some light oxidation and tool marks. The lock has blended brown and gray patina and slight spotting. The brass and silver have attractive aged patina. The stock is very good with a crack at the rear barrel wedge on the right, attractive flame figure, and scattered minor dings and scratches. The toe plate is a replacement, and the barrel tang screw is stripped. The lock needs work as it does not hold full-cock.
