South Asia, India, ca. 19th to early-20th century CE. A sandstone sculpture, likely once part of a building facade, possibly from a royal monument, temple, or governmental structure. The figure depicts a soldier with modern influences, likely European colonial in origin, featuring knee-high boots, a button-down tunic or coat, a turban headdress, and a rifle held against the shoulder. Soldiers with firearms were a common subject in architectural decoration of this type. This piece can be compared to similar soldier carvings found at the Chhatri at Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh. Size: 11" L x 8" W x 40" H (27.9 cm x 20.3 cm x 101.6 cm)
