South Asia, India, Tamil Nadu region, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A cast brass murti depicting a Hindu deity, likely Shiva, though the absence of defining attributes leaves the exact identification open to interpretation. The figure is seated in lalitasana (the "royal ease" pose), with one leg bent and the other resting downward in a relaxed yet dignified posture. The upper two arms once held attributes, while the lower hands may have also carried objects or formed mudras (symbolic hand gestures). Atop the head is a tall, conical headdress or crown known as a kiritam / kireetam mukut - a style commonly associated with the Tamil Nadu region. In Hinduism, a murti is a sacred image or statue of a deity central to worship and devotional practices. The surface of this figure bears signs of significant weathering, indicative of extensive ritual use over time. Size: 1.75" W x 2.75" H (4.4 cm x 7 cm)

Provenance: private Thousand Oaks, California, USA collection, acquired 1970s to 2000s
