Woldemar Johannes Hau (Vladimir Ivanovich Gau) 1816-1895 was a German Baltic portrait painter who worked in the Biedermeier style. He was born to the painter Johannes Hau and grew up in the German community of Tallinn. He studied with Karl von Kügelgen and was offered the opportunity to paint the grand duchesses at the age of sixteen. He worked as a freelance painter and travelled extensively through Italy and Germany before being appointed painter to the Russian Court, spending the next three decades painting the royal family and their associates. He was known to have painted Natalia Nikolayevna Pushkina-Lanskaya, née Goncharova (1812 –1863) who was the wife of the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin from 1831 until his death in 1837 in a duel with Georges d'Anthès. It is possible that the portrait offered is that of Pushkin's daughter, Natalia Alexandrovna Pushkina who was born in June 1836 which would correspond to the date of this painting. Natalia Alexandrovna Pushkina, later Countess of Merenberg (1836-1913), was the daughter of noted Russian poet Alexander Pushkin and the morganic wife of Prince Nikolas Wilhelm of Nassau (1832-1905).
