EXCEPTIONAL RUSSIAN BRONZE BY POSEN
Leonid Vladimirovich Pozen (1849–1921)
Man in Sorrow – circa 1883
Bronze with dark brown patina
Inscribed on base in script form Sculp.Posene and with C.F. Woerffel foundry mark St. Petersburg
Height 6.25 inches (15.8cm), width 6.75 inches 17cm

Provenance:
The estate of the late Dr. John Edward Sinsky, MD, a noted Russophile whose collection Jackson's was honored to sell in 2011.

The offered bronze represents a crisp, sharp lifetime casting exhibiting great detail throughout and is in excellent original untouched condition, with a beautiful, rich, even overall patina. A truly fine example.

Leonid V. Posen was a highly prominent Russo-Ukrainian realist sculptor and politician, widely known for his detailed bronze cabinet sculptures that captured the daily life of peasants, Cossacks, and animals. Incredibly, Posen had no formal artistic training. He studied law at the Imperial University of St. Petersburg and worked in the Russian judicial system for over forty years. He first practiced sculpting as a child using rye bread. He belonged to the Realist movement and was heavily associated with the Peredvizhniki (The Wanderers). His contemporary peers included legendary painters such as Ilya Repin and Ivan Kramskoy. Unlike other sculptors of his era who focused on nobility or hunting, Posen made the humble peasant and ordinary rural life the center of his work. He modeled his original figures in wax, which were then cast into high-quality bronze, primarily at the renowned K.F. Woerffel Foundry in St. Petersburg, such as the offered lot. His most noted smaller-scale cabinet pieces include Taking the Ducks to Market, The Beggar, Zaporozhian Cossack, and Man in Sorrow, the subject of the offered lot. It is interesting to note that this same figure appears in Posen's 1883 larger group Settlers.
