Fantastic and Scarce Factory Rashid El Hadi Signed and Master Engraved J. Purdey & Sons .410 Bore Extra Finish Self-Opening Sidelock Double Barrel Shotgun Two Barrel Set with Case James Purdey & Sons is one of the most highly regarded and outright revered names in the world of high end firearms, a reputation rightfully earned over their long and storied history in the trade. Every piece that they build is a work of art, deserving of placement in the finest collections. This fine gun was built on Purdey's diminutive purpose made .410 bore action, adding to the allure of this incredible piece as they are scarcely made. Due to the bespoke nature and attention to detail of their best quality guns, it takes Purdey 18-24 months to finish each arm, with this .410 bore almost certainly taking all of that time, if not more, given the addition of the master level engraving carried out by Master Engraver Rashid El Hadi. The gun was built with blacked steel chopperlump barrels featuring a single bead sight on the raised flat narrow matted solid rib, light engraving at the breech with a flourish at the base of the rib, "J. PURDEY & SONS." and "AUDLEY HOUSE. SOUTH AUDLEY STREET. LONDON." marked on the left and right tubes respectively, 1987 dated London proof marks on the flats, tube numbers "75359"/"75360"and chambers marked 3 inches with Purdey's Wem ejectors. The barrels are fitted to the brushed bright Beesley patent self-opening sidelock action which features bushed firing pins, intercepting sears, ribbed cocking indicators, double triggers, and a tang mounted automatic safety with gold inlaid "SAFE" indicator. The action is magnificently decorated with near full coverage broad ornamental scroll engraving with many of the scrolls terminating in bird's heads showing mallards, song birds, cocks, hawks, and peacocks all in lovely detail and cut in relief to create contrast with the matted background. The engraving surrounds "J. PURDEY & SONS." banners on either lockplate leg as well as "J. PURDEY & SONS./ENGLAND" on the underside before continuing onto the toplever, trigger guard, and both tangs, the bottom of which is inlaid with the serial number in flush gold. Rashid El Hadi has signed his work "REHadi" on the triggerplate to the right of the trigger. The gun is fitted with a beautifully figured and mullered border multi-point checkered splinter forend with matching engraved coin finished iron and Anson button release as well as a straight grip stock with teardrop carved drop points, gold "JJM" inlaid directly into the toe line, and a checkered butt. Includes an extra matching numbered .410 bore barrel set which measures 26 inches and was also proofed in 1987 with 3 inch chambers as well as a leather motor case with canvas cover that houses the entire set. Barrel measurements for the 26 inch set (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proofed at .409 inches and measured .411 inches; choke constriction .022/.022 inches. Barrel and stock measurements for the 24 inch set (R/L): both proofed at .409 inches and measured .411 inches; choke constriction .005/.002 inches; 1 7/16 inch drop at comb; 1 15/16 inch drop at heel; 15 7/8 inch length of pull; cast-off; weight 5 lbs.
