Exceptional Colt Model 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver with Squareback Trigger Guard This Colt Model 1851 was manufactured in 1851, the second year of production, and is a Second Model with the squareback brass trigger guard and the screw above the wedge on the left. Only a few thousand of these were manufactured before production transitioned over to the small round brass trigger guard. Many were undoubtedly lost or destroyed, and few that survive aren't anywhere near this high level of condition. The barrel has a small cone front sight and "-ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY-." The frames has the small "COLTS/PATENT" marking on the left. The matching serial number is marked on the loading lever, arbor pin, cylinder, frame, trigger guard, back strap, and grip in the back strap inlet. The replacement wedge is marked "479." The cylinder has the standard Battle of Campeche naval scene which Colt commissioned as a thank you since orders of revolvers and revolving rifles by the Republic of Texas had helped Colt gain his first significant sales and the Texans' successful battles, including those later by the Texas Rangers, helped bolster the appeal of Colt's firearms across the country. Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1851 Navy BBL: 7 1/2 inch octagon Stock: Gauge: 36 percussion Finish: blue/casehardened/silver Grips: walnut Serial Number: 2911 Class: Antique Condition: Very fine. 90% of the original silver plating remains on the grip frame. The silver has taken on a dark, bluish patina, and the small spots of exposed brass have light aged patina. The barrel retains 60% of the original blue finish, and the cylinder retains 75% and still has all but one of the safety pins. There is some slight marring of the nipple slot edges. The balance of the barrel and cylinder has smooth gray and brown patina. The casehardened components retain half of the muted original case colors and otherwise an even gray and brown blend. It is mechanically excellent and retains crisp markings throughout. The grip is fine with light scratches and dings on the butt, mild edge wear, and a chip on the right at the toe. You will look a long time to find a finer example!
