Exceptionally Fine Documented Special Order Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle in Desirable .38-55 W.C.F. Caliber with Factory Letter Winchester Model 1894 Sporting Rifle was manufactured prior to 1898, but not shipped until 1899. The factory letter confirms the special order 26 inch round barrel with half magazine, shotgun hard rubber buttplate and Lyman "Jack" front sight and Lyman rear, plain trigger and 38/55 caliber. The rifle was received in the warehouse on October 20, 1899 and shipped out the same day on order number 41611. The rifle has a sporting style buckhorn rear sight with serrated edges and screw adjustable center notch. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/- WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation: "38-55" is stamped on the top of the barrel immediately ahead of the receiver. The upper tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1894/-WINCHESTER-/PAT. AUG.21.1894". The serial number "66747" is stamped across the underside of the receiver just behind the forearm. The rifle has a blue finish with casehardened hammer. The stock and forearm are varnished straight grain American walnut. The black hard rubber shotgun buttplate is checkered and embossed with the "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS" logo in the center. This rifle is all original and retains 85% plus of the original blue finish overall. The barrel has several small spots of age discoloration near the muzzle. The receiver retains more than 90% of the blue finish with some thinning on the flared edges at the junction with the forearm. Nearly all of the original blue is present on the bolt. The loading gate and ejector have nearly all of the niter blue finish. The hammer shows strong case colors. The barrel and receiver markings are crisp. The stock and forearm are in excellent overall condition and retain at least 90% of the low luster varnish finish. Wear is limited to a few very minor handling and storage marks.
