Exceptional Burgess Slide Action Shotgun This is an exceptional example of a Burgess slide action shotgun with the Damascus pattern barrel. The Burgess Gun Company was established in 1892 by Andrew Burgess, a very prolific gun designer in the late 1890s. Burgess was credited as having numerous mechanical patents for various firearms used by several of the well known arms producers. These shotguns were manufactured only from 1892-1899 before the company and all the patents were purchased by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Features a single bead sight, loose cylinder choke, and length of pull 14 inches. The breechblock cover is marked "BURGESS GUN CO./BUFFALO, N.Y. U.S.A." The underside of the receiver has the serial number and two-line patent marking. All markings are highlighted in white. The forearm and pistol grip feature multi-point checkering. The buttstock is fitted with a factory dog head embossed checkered hard rubber buttplate. Provenance: Gillespie collection. Manufacturer: Burgess Gun Co Model: pump shotgun BBL: 28 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 12 Finish: brown/blue Grips: Serial Number: 2368 Class: Antique Condition: Excellent. The barrel retains 95% plus original Damascus pattern overall. The remaining metal surfaces retain 98% plus bright original high polished blue finish with streaking of the magazine tube and the balance showing some minor scratches. The hammer retains 95% of the vivid case colors. The wood is also excellent with a long scratch visible on the buttstock (left side), a couple minor dents and some minor handling/storage marks. Mechanically excellent. This has to be one of the finest examples of a Burgess shotgun that we have ever offered at auction!
