Scarce Factory Engraved and Two-Tone Gold/Nickel Finished Mauser "Zig-Zag" Single Action Revolver An improvement on the Model 1878 Revolver, the "Zig-Zag" uses a reciprocating spring-loaded arm riding in a track around the side of the cylinder instead of more traditional arrangement of a pawl engaging the rear cylinder face, with the arm also doubling as a secondary locking mechanism for the barrel latch. While a sturdy and compact handgun, Mauser would move on to the famous 1896 Broomhandle semi-automatic pistol, Fine scroll and leaf pattern engraving is present overall, particularly dense on the barrel lug and cylinder, with a fine nickel finish overall and a gold wash on the hammer, cylinder, trigger, and screws. Number "58" is present on the frame, latch, cylinder and trigger. The grips are fine hard rubber with raised vine and dragon themed decoration around the lightly engraved screw. Manufacturer: Mauser Model: Zig-Zag BBL: 3 3/4 inch round Stock: Gauge: 8 mm Finish: nickel/gold Grips: hard rubber Serial Number: 58 Class: Antique Condition: Very fine, with 80% plus period replated nickel/gold finish, showing some flaking on the high edges and along the underside of the barrel, along with some mild handling marks and spotting. The gold is preserved in the protected areas, which on the cylinder in particular gives a nice "fill-in" effect with the upper surfaces showing bright nickel and attractive gold in the engraving and the zig-zag cuts. The grips are excellent, with a small amount of wear on and around the screw. Mechanically functions fine, although the shell extractor does not retract when closed.
