Unique Combination Short Sword and Pinfire Revolver with Etched Retailer-Marked Blade, and Engraved Scabbard The 15 1/4 inch long, 1 1/2 inch blade has dual fullers on the front 8 1/4 inches on each side and is etched with floral scrollwork on both sides and "ALFREDO HEROUARD" and "LIMA" (retailer-marking) in the right side. The guard and pommel cap are German silver with engraved floral scrollwork. The revolver is built into the hilt and has a "E. Lefaucheux Bte a Paris" marking on the barrel, an ejector, a six-shot cylinder, and a hinged loading gate. The scales/grips are ebonized hardwood or ebony, and are checkered. The scabbard has a leather body and matching engraving on the German silver fittings. The barrel appears to have been nickel-plated and then silver-plated, and the German silver components also show signs of silver plating. We auctioned off a similar, but shorter weapon with Alfredo Herouard and Lefaucheux markings based on the same revolver and hilt design in April 2012 that was owned by Peruvian President Jose Balta (1814-1872). Two similar Herouard marked swords complete with sheaths are pictured on page 194 of "The Pinfire System" by Smith & Curtis. Provenance: Gillespie collection. Manufacturer: European Model: Pinfire BBL: 3 1/8 inch round Stock: Gauge: 8 mm PF Finish: nickel/silver Grips: hardwood Serial Number: 8655 Class: Antique Condition: Fine overall with traces of original silver plating in most areas, stronger silver plating on the throat of the scabbard, nearly all of the nickel plating on the barrel, aged patina on the German silver, mottled dark gray patina on the blade, dark brown patina on the iron, some minor oxidation and pitting, a secure but somewhat loose fitting blade, and mild wear on the leather. Mechanically fine.
