Early Inlaid Walnut Kentucky Corner Cupboard
This early Chippendale corner cupboard is a beautiful example of early Kentucky cabinetmaking. It has highly figured walnut primary wood and poplar secondary wood. It has two blind doors over two blind doors. The blind doors each have a single walnut board panel framed by a joinered doory support and quarter round mold around each of the panels. The insides of the door panels retain the evidence of hand chamfered edges. The upper and lower drawers bothe have a diamond inlay key escutcheon and early federal brass pulls. Upon the top of the case is an original triple crown molding. The upper and lower portion of the case is partitioned by a hand planed waist molding that is affixed with hand wrought square nails. The upper blind doors conceal an inner compartment with three shelves and a base level. The lower compartment has one shelf and a base level. The lower compartment retains its original handmade iron lock. The top compartment lock is missing. The top compartment retains an early federal era green paint. The back boards are wide hand planed poplar boards. They are attached to the case with square nails and exhibit an old dry finish with a wonderful homogenous patina gained from over 200 years of oxidation. The case rests upon a base molding with a shaped shoulder spurs and a Chippendale bracket foot. Circa 1780-1800. Provenance: This piece was part of the collection of the late Mrs. Myra Swope Munday of historic Bright's Inn in Stanford, KY. Before that, the piece was acquired from an Estate sale in Franklin County, Kentucky by Mrs. Munday's parents in the 1950s. Bright's Inn was built by a Kentucky Revolutionary War veteran Captain John Bright. It was a frontier stage coach stop on the Wilderness Trail and hosted many early Kentucky settlers and statesmen from the late 1700s until the early 1900s. Dimensions. 83 5/8" tall by 25 ½" deep and fits a 46" corner (diagonal width of case at widest point).
