Extremely Important Wedgwood 1817 Dinner Plate made for Tsar Alexander I for the St. Petersburg Palace with Provenance
Tsar Alexander I (reign 1801-1825). Once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase a Wedgwood dinner plate that was ordered by Tsar Alexander I for the winter palace at St. Petersburg. The 9 7/8" creamware plate was sold in 1933 to a Chicago area relative of our consignor by Marshall Field & Co .from the Armand Hammer collection. Below is the transcript of the 1933 letter authenticating the piece:
Dinner Plate of bone china decorated with narrow black and gold rim and the Russian Imperial double-crested eagle on the border. Part o a service made in the Josiah Wedgwood Factory for Alexander I. One of these plates was sent to England by Kennard L. Wedgwood, a descendant of the founder, where it was authenticated. The factory reported that the original order was received in 1817 for 81 dozen plates and was repeated for the same amount in 1823.
From the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The plate is framed and shows no wear or damage. The letter and subsequent letters from Marshall Field, which were found in an envelope taped to the back of the frame are included in the lot. While an American Department store today would probably not be the best venue for selling high priced antiques, Armand Hammer and his brother Victor were engaged in that enterprise in the 1930's and later selling them in their New York gallery. Frame measurement is 14" square.
From the Estate of Henry and Ann Soukup.
