Documented E.R. Hitchcock Oakland, California Flintlock Kentucky Rifle This 1932 American long rifle and its maker, E.R. Hitchcock, are fully documented in the article "The Making of a Kentucky Flintlock Rifle" by Clarence A. Willis in the included copy of the August 1935 issue of "The American Rifleman" which explains the origin of the project and the steps taken to create it over the course of a year. The rifle is based on a Golden Age original by Jacob Dickert and was hand built for Willis. The barrel is marked "E.R. HITCHCOCK/OAKLAND. CALIF. 1932." and was cut from round stock and rifled on a traditional hand-powered rifling machine and has a 1-in-52 inch right hand twist. It is fitted with a globe front sight and a traditional notch rear sight. A peep sight is fitted to the tang. The article mentions these sights were used in target shooting and easily removed and replaced with a traditional blade front sight for exhibition. The groups demonstrated in the article indicate it is an incredibly accurate shooter. The lock was hand built based on an example from the famous Captain John G. W. Dillin collection and is marked "E.R. HITCHCOCK/OAKLAND. CALIF./1932." All the of the screws and bolts are also handmade. The Pennsylvania curly maple stock was shaped from a plank and is fitted with eight silver inlays along the forend, a silver cheekpiece edge plate, and a traditional silver hunter's star on the cheekpiece. The patch box, trigger guard, and other furniture were cast and then filed and polished, and the patch box, side plate, and toe plate are attractively engraved. Manufacturer: American Model: Flintlock BBL: 44 1/2 inch octagon Stock: maple Gauge: 451 Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Very fine. 90% of the custom blue finish remains.
