William Hawken Percussion American Long Rifle William Hawken (1798-1885) was the brother of Jacob and Samuel Hawken. Unlike his brothers, he remained in the East and established shops in Hagerstown and Williamsport, Maryland, and produced mainly full stock American long rifles. The barrel is marked "W HAWKEN" on top in bold letters behind the notch rear sight. It also has a dovetailed German silver front sight. The lock is marked "JAMES GOLCHER" and has simple bird and floral patterns. It is equipped with double set triggers and has a full length highly figured curly maple stock with German silver rear wedge escutcheons and thumb plate, spire point patch box finial, C scroll style side plates, toe plate with bone patch box button, and a German silver eagle and shield inlay on the cheekpiece. The lack of carving suggests it is a later rifle. The patch box design and other elements match other documented William Hawken rifles including those pictured in "The Artistry of the Hawken Family" by William H. Reisner Jr. from the American Society of Arms Collectors. Manufacturer: Hawken Model: Full Stock BBL: 41 inch octagon Stock: maple Gauge: 44 Finish: brown/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Good with mottled gray and brown patina on the iron, heavy erosion at the breech, mild pitting throughout, and general scratches and dings. The brass and German silver have aged patina, and the inside of the patch box has bright verdigris. The stock is very good and has exceptional figure, mostly glossy refinished finish, a textured patch and some minor cracking in a few areas on the left side of the butt, a small sliver absent above the nose of the lock, small nicks, and general surface scratches. Mechanically fine.
