Desirable Colt Second Model Dragoon Percussion Revolver All of Colt's Dragoon revolvers were very popular both with the military and civilians, especially in the Southwest where Colt's revolvers first really gained recognition during the Mexican-American War. They were easily among the most powerful handguns available at the time and were a significant improvement over the cumbersome and faulty Walker revolvers. They were used by well-known individuals on both sides of the law. For example, Harriet Tubman reportedly carried a Dragoon during her heroic expeditions to free slaves for protection and to ensure escapees did not try to defect and thus endanger the whole group. Only an estimated 2,700 of these Second Model revolvers were manufactured compared to 7,000 First Model revolvers and 10,500 Third Models making them the scarcest of the main Dragoon models. The most readily visible change from the First Model Dragoon is the use of the rectangular cylinder stops. On late examples, the mainsprings are the flat leaf style and the hammers have rollers, but this example retains the "V" mainspring and hammer without a roller. It dates to 1851 and has "-ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY-" on top of the barrel, vertical loading lever latch, standard blade and hammer notch sights, Texas Ranger and Indian roll-engraved cylinder scene with "COLT'S PATENT" and "MODEL U.S.M.R." markings, small single letter inspection marks, silver plated square back trigger guard and back strap (standard for commercial sales), a smooth one-piece walnut grip, and matching serial numbers on the loading lever, barrel, cylinder pin, cylinder, frame, trigger guard, back strap, and back strap inlet on the grip. Manufacturer: Colt Model: Dragoon BBL: 7 1/2 inch round Stock: Gauge: 44 percussion Finish: blue/casehardened/silver Grips: walnut Serial Number: 9596 Class: Antique Condition: Very good. The barrel retains 20% of original blue finish. The blue is strongest in the areas protected by the wedge and loading lever. Traces of subtle case colors are still visible, especially on the right side of the frame, and there are also patches of original silver plating in protected areas of the grip frame. The exposed brass and silver both display aged patinas. The balance displays a gray-brown blend and light pitting and oxidation, most notably at the muzzle and the front of the cylinder. The markings remain legible and mostly crisp including the cylinder scene which is fine. The grip is very good with mild dings and scratches, slight chipping at the toe, and lower edge wear. It is mechanically excellent. This is both an attractive and solid representative example of one of the most desirable of all models of Colt percussion revolvers.
