Civil War C.B. Hoard "Watertown" Marked U.S. Contract Model 1861 Percussion Rifle-Musket Charles Brooks Hoard (1805-1886) was an Free Soil Democrat and then Republican politician and a steam engine manufacturer in Watertown, New York. He received contracts for 70,000 Model 1861 rifle-muskets but was only able to deliver 12,800 by the end of the war, and he took a loss on the contracts due to the cost of the necessary machinery and materials. These are among the rarer Model 1861 contract rifle-muskets. This example has the standard sights; "1864" and standard proofs at the breech; the eagle and shield motif, "U.S./WATERTOWN," and "1864" on the lock; part of a leather sling; a blank German silver plaque on the right side of the stock; and "C. B. HOARD" and an inspector's cartouche stamped on the left stock flat. Manufacturer: Hoard's Arms Model: 1861 BBL: 40 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 58 percussion Finish: bright Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Very good plus. The metal displays primarily a mottled gray patina, splotches of oil staining, and some light oxidation. The buttplate has a darker brown patina. The stock is very good with moderate surface wear including numerous small scuffs and dings. Mechanically excellent. All the markings are distinct.
