East Asia, China, Ming to Qing Dynasty, ca. 16th to 19th century CE. A Chinese wood figure seated in meditation, likely depicting the bodhisattva Guanyin, shown with hands in the dhyana mudra - palms up, resting in the lap - a gesture of inner stillness and contemplation. The surface is weathered but has remains of gilding and cinnabar-red lacquer, emphasizing the pleated robes and crown, while the posture and frontal gaze convey a commanding sense of serenity. On the verso, a rectangular niche is sealed with a wood panel, intended to house prayers, consecration offerings, or spiritual relics, underscoring the figure's role in ritual practice. Likely used in an altar or shrine context, the figure is seated on an integral plinth. Size: 5.5" W x 12.5" H (14 cm x 31.8 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection
