East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty,. Ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A splendid wooden sculpture of the bodhisattva Guanyin seated in dhyanasana atop a lotus throne and tri-tiered pedestal. Draped in a long, cascading robe and dhoti, the deity's hands are placed in the dhyana mudra of meditation, while the face presents a benevolent expression detailed with downcast eyes beneath high arched brows, flanked by long pendulous ears and surmounted by a piled top bun with 2 ribbons falling to the shoulders. Size: 5" L x 5.8" W x 14.3" H (12.7 cm x 14.7 cm x 36.3 cm)

The goddess Guanyin, also known as the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, was one of the most popular figures around the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, a period in which the sculptural style of images of Guanyin was expanded. Avalokiteshvara became popular as the deity of mercy and compassion, answering prayers and protecting the faithful from catastrophe. In contrast to images of the Buddha, who had already attained enlightenment, bodhisattvas have vowed to remain in the world to ensure the ultimate salvation of all sentient beings. The portrayal of bodhisattvas in the Ming dynasty largely continued from the sculptural traditions established in the preceding dynasties, with similar poise, expression of the face and overall countenance.

  • Condition: Some stable fissures to wood, as well as nicks, chips, and abrasions as shown, all commensurate with age. Old repair to small areas of base. Otherwise, very nice presentation with good preservation of gilding and detail. Modern felt pads on undersid of base for protection.
