Exceptional Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle in 45-90 with Casehardened Receiver and Factory Letter The factory letter confirms the serial number was applied on November 10, 1894, the rifle was received in the warehouse on December 11, 1894, and was shipped as a rifle with a .45-90 octagon barrel and plain trigger on August 30, 1895, to fill order number 19373. This rifle has the very desirable casehardened receiver, forearm cap, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate. The barrel, magazine, bolt, loading gate cover and trigger have the Winchester charcoal blue finish. The American walnut stock and forearm have a slightly fancier grain than the standard straight grain walnut and appear to be the "extra finish" walnut offered on rifles with casehardened receivers prior to 1900. The stock and forearm have a varnish finish with extra polish which is typically found on "extra finish" walnut stocks. The full octagon barrel has the standard sporting style front sight with nickel silver blade and sporting style buckhorn rear sight with serrated edges and screw adjustable center piece. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped for a peep sight. The top barrel flat is stamped: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "45-90 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL 1886-". The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll-stamped in two lines on the lower tang behind the trigger and the serial number. The serial number is stamped in script numerals ahead of the lower tang screw. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1886-Rifle BBL: 26 inch octagon Stock: varnished walnut Gauge: 45-90 WCF Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 94814 Class: Antique Condition: Excellent plus. This rifle is all original and retains 98% of the blue and color casehardened finish with only traces of handling and storage wear. The barrel and full-length magazine have nearly 99% of the original blue finish with only traces of edge wear at the muzzle and some very fine scuff marks on the magazine band. The Winchester legend and caliber designation are extremely sharp. The bolt and loading gate have 98% of the blue finish. The receiver has 98% of the vivid case colors. The case colors on the forearm cap, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are strong and at least 95%. The slightly figured, "extra finish" stock and forearm are in the same nearly new condition as the metal components and retain nearly all of the varnish finish with minimal storage or handling wear. This is a stunning example of a Winchester Model 1886 rifle. It would be hard to find a better example of a standard grade Model 1886 Winchester rifle. The vivid case colors on the receiver, "extra finish" stock and forearm and exceptional overall condition of this rifle make it a stand-out piece in the finest collection of Winchester rifles.
