This rifle has the Second Model receiver with screw-fastened dust cover guide and late Second Model dust cover with serrated finger guides. The rifle has a special order full octagon barrel and half-magazine. The barrel has a standard sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and a standard folding leaf rear sight with rear face of the leaf graduated to "10" and top of the leaf marked "1876" below the elevator bar stop screw. The top of the receiver is factory drilled and tapped. The crescent buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor, and the butt trap contains a five-piece, jointed, steel cleaning rod with brass tip. The stock and forearm are straight grain, oil-finished American walnut. The rifle has the standard blue finish on the barrel, forearm cap, receiver, dust cover and crescent buttplate. The loading gate has a fire blue finish. The magazine tip, hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1886." in fancy letters. The serial number, "16813", is roll-stamped is script numerals on the lower tang between the lever latch and the rear tang screw. Neither the top barrel flat or the bottom of the cartridge elevator have any caliber markings which indicates that this rifle is chambered for the .45-75 WCF cartridge that was the standard Model 1876 caliber. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1876 BBL: 28 inch octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 45-75 Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 16813 Class: Antique Condition: Excellent. The blue finish is thin on the left side of the forearm cap. The receiver retains nearly all of the blue finish with some thinning on the left front and on the edges of the side plates. The dust cover has nearly all of the blue finish with a few minor scratches and handling marks. The loading gate retains about 90% of the fire blue finish. The contact points on the buttplate heel and toe show finish wear with some scattered spots of age discoloration; the buttplate has 70% of the blue finish. The bottom of the brass cartridge elevator has a good-looking, attractive aged yellow patina. The hammer, trigger and lever retain 85% of the original muted case colors. The stock and forearm are in excellent condition with nearly all of the original oil finish and only very insignificant handling and storage wear. This is an exceptional example of a scare and very desirable Second Model Winchester 1876 rifle with special order half magazine.
