Brown Bess Style Flintlock Fusil Officers traditionally carried espontoons, halberds, and swords depending on their rank since they were primarily carried as a badge of rank and an identifying symbol to their men. However, the realities of fighting in North America led to officers being permitted to adopt fusils as their personal arms around the 1740s, and they did so with increasing regularity up through the American Revolution. This example has brass furniture mostly similar to that of a standard Brown Bess musket other than the ornate side plate which has a hunting theme and the thumb plate which has an eagle on top, floral design on the bottom, and bow and arrow at the sides. The civilian lock has scroll engraving and a fluer-de-lis finial. There are no identifying markings or proofs, but it was likely manufactured in the mid-18th century. The stock has the round flat around the upper tang and the stylized wrist/comb of the Brown Bess. Manufacturer: European Model: Flintlock BBL: 44 7/8 inch part octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 80 Finish: brown Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Very good as reconverted to flintlock configuration and refinished with half of the brown and patches pitting on the barrel, dark patina and some mild pitting on the lock, aged patina on the brass, and general minor marks. The refinished stock is good with a smooth re-oiled finish, cracks and repairs ahead of the lock and on both sides of the forend, the common tension crack at the rear lock screw, some minor insect damage on the butt, and general scrapes in dings. Mechanically fine, but it will fire from half-cock.
