European Flintlock Fowling Piece with Relief Carved Buttstock This unusual fowling piece is only marked with a "W.I" hallmark on top at the breech and has a blade front sight, some simple engraving patterns at the transition point and breech, and convex lock with bridle-less pan/frizzen and a fluer-de-lis style frizzen spring finial. The left stock flat and the butt are bare but have been carved as if they have plates. The butt even features horn "screws" in the normal spots for a buttplate. It has raised relief floral designs that coordinate well with the engraving and includes a boar on the left behind the cheekpiece. The trigger guard is also wood. The forend cap is horn. It was likely manufactured in one of the Germanic states or Austria in the early to mid 18th century. Somewhat similar fowling pieces by Peter Wittemann of Giessen, Hessen, are known with false screws and buttplates. Manufacturer: European Model: Flintlock BBL: 40 3/4 inch part octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 20 Finish: brown/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Fine. The barrel retains 50% plus of the period refinished brown and has some minor scratches and marks. The lock has been cleaned bright on the exterior but has strong case colors on the underside. The frizzen has been refaced. The silver ramrod pipes have aged patina. The stock is fine with a band of metal added to secure the trigger guard, some cracking around the lower butt "screw," minor cracking in the forend cap, and generally crisp carving. Mechanically fine.
