Photographs

A fine collection of handsome Civil War-era stereoviews and stereoscopic views of important sites in Washington, D.C., including the White House; Arlington House and Arlington National Cemetery; Capitol Building; Washington Arsenal; Old Capitol Prison; Ford's Theatre; and various municipal buildings draped with mourning bunting following Abraham Lincoln's assassination. A few are dated either by copyright or hand-inscription, and generally the grouping dates from ca. 1860-1871. Various publishers from Washington, D.C., New York, Boston, and Niagara Falls, including: E. & H.T. Anthony & Co. (6); Bell & Bro. (7); G.D. Wakely (3); C. Bierstadt (1); John P. Soule (2); J.F. Jarvis (1); and unmarked (7). The sepia-colored albumen photographs are affixed to thick stock colored mounts in cream, yellow, light pink, burnt orange, and mint green; two feature hand-painted details. Scattered manuscript inscriptions, and isolated ownership or ex-collection hand-stamps. Expected surface wear including scattered foxing, flyspecking, weathering, and water stains. Please refer to catalog photos for additional information related to condition, which is overall very good. The average size of the assorted views is 6.875" x 3.5". 27 pieces total.

The lot includes, arranged by subject:

- Five different views of the White House or "President's House," and its immediate vicinity, including the General Andrew Jackson Statue. The E. & H.T. Anthony & Co. view is No. 2986 of "Washington City Views" and shows the South Portico with hand-painted lawn and shrubbery.

- Five different views of Arlington House, today part of the Arlington House & Robert E. Lee Memorial, as well as Arlington National Cemetery.

- Three different views of the unfinished Capitol Building, one colorized with an incomplete dome, ca. 1860; the other two showing the Capitol Building in a more advanced state of construction though still with scaffolding, ca. 1863. The E. & H.T. Anthony & Co. view is No. 1295 of "Washington City Views" and shows scaffolding around the Statue of Freedom.

- Five different views of Washington, D.C. municipal landmarks, including: War Building; Old Capitol Prison where the Lincoln conspirators were held; Soldiers' Home; Washington Arsenal; and the Naval Yard. The E. & H.T. Anthony & Co. view is No. 1313 of "E. & H.T. Anthony's Stereoscopic Views in Washington City, DC" and shows the prison façade.

- Three different views of Ford's Theatre, site of Lincoln's assassination.

- Six different views of the Capitol Building and Treasury Building draped in mourning bunting following Lincoln's assassination, ca. April 1865. Including Nos. 2982, 2988, and 2989 of E. & H.T. Anthony & Co. "Washington City Views," one featuring Horatio Greenough's "Statue of Civilization" in profile.

Unless otherwise indicated, we do our own in-house world-wide shipping!

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. We offer several shipping options, and remain one of the few auction houses that proudly provides professional in-house shipping as an option to our clients. All items will ship with a signature required option, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

Third-Party Shipping Option: If a third-party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers. For your protection, we will require a signed release from you, confirming your authorization for us to release your lots to your specified third-party. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third-party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax. Items requiring third-party shipping due to being oversized, fragile or bulky will be denoted in the item description.
