Archive

A diverse collection of 19th century prints, engravings, and photographs, many originating from France and the United States. Totaling 44 pieces in all, with the majority produced ca. 1810s-1890s. The lot notably includes a series of lithograph engravings promoting French theater, 4 large-scale cabinet photographs, and 15 fashion plates from the Philadelphia-based 'Peterson's Magazine'. Ranging in size from 6" x 9" to 11" x 14". Exhibits varying degrees of darkened soiling, age toning, and minor edge loss throughout. Intermittent tearing present. Evidence of separation repair to some. Please refer to images for further condition information. Overall, very good.

Highlights include:

- Alexandre Lacauchie (1814-1886). Colored lithograph of Gilbert Duprez in the role of Arnoldo from the opera 'William Tell', ca. 1840s. 6" x 9".

- Simon Thomassin (1670-1733). Engraved portrait of Louis II de Bourbon, Prince of Condé, or "le Grand Condé". 9.5" x 12.75".

- (2) Colored fashion prints published by the brothers Pauquet, entitled "Costumes d'apparat. Regne de Charles V" and "Medecin. Regne de Charles VIII", ca. 1860s. Each 10" x 12.75".

- (2) Lithograph engravings from the "Galerie Theatrale" series depicting Mademoiselle Volnais (1786-1837) as Iphigenia and Augustin Chéron (1760-1811) as Agamemnon. Each 9" x 12.5".

- (15) hand colored fashion plates, the majority from Peterson's Magazine by Illman Brothers engravers, ca. 1859-1881. Each approximately 11.5" x 9.5".

- (6) Colorful "Vinegar Valentines" each bearing a printed illustration and satirical poem, ca. 1890s. Measuring between 6.25" x 11.5" and 9" x 14".

- (2) Sepia-toned photographs showing a group of men and women on the beach in Roslyn, Long Island, dated August 5, 1894. Each mounted to an overall size of 11" x 14".

- Lucia Tallarico (1919-2014). Original sketch of two men at a piano, signed and dated November 5, 1972 in the lower right. 12" x 9".

- (4) Etching reproductions of 18th century taverns by E.T. Scowcroft, produced ca. first half 20th century. Each measuring 14" x 10.25".

Unless otherwise indicated, we do our own in-house world-wide shipping!

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. We offer several shipping options, and remain one of the few auction houses that proudly provides professional in-house shipping as an option to our clients. All items will ship with a signature required option, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

Third-Party Shipping Option: If a third-party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers. For your protection, we will require a signed release from you, confirming your authorization for us to release your lots to your specified third-party. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third-party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax. Items requiring third-party shipping due to being oversized, fragile or bulky will be denoted in the item description.
