Two very rare photo albums dating to 1918, assembled by Japanese soldier training for the Siberian Intervention War. Both have an unusual accordian-fold construction. One abounds with names, home towns, ages of fellow recruits (of course, in Japanese). It is mostly military and has a photo with four Japanese aviators in leather jackets standing in front of their 1918 biplane. There are many men shown in full dress military uniforms. The second album is mainly of family members -- portraits and groups, some candid, some arranged. Japanese photos of this time period are very rare. Larger album measures about 7-1/2" wide. The Siberian Intervention War -- between the USA and Russia between 1918-1920 -- involved 15,000 American troops, joining with Japan, who added 70,000 soldiers along with other Western allies and sailed off to invade maritime Russia. Ostensibly this was to help the White Russians overthrow the Bolsheviks (Communists) who had just taken over the country. Secretly it was for the U.S. to help evacuate the 50,000-member Czech Liberation Legion, now caught behind enemy lines, and also to remove tons of military supplies given to the Czar’s Russian army fighting against Germany and Austria on the eastern front, before either the Germans or the Bolsheviks captured them. Japan’s secret goal was to capture Siberia, free it, and make it an independent buffer state between Japan and Russia.
