The rounded ear forms, protruding mouth, feather arrangement, painted white cheek motifs, and simplified body construction are consistent with older First Mesa Hopi carvings made for ceremonial and teaching use rather than the later tourist-market carvings of the mid-20th century. Manfred Susunkewa (Hopi, b.1940) Hilili Kachina carved wood, natural pigments, feathers, horse hair, underside inscribed: MSusunkewa [spider cipher]. Size: 11'' x 4'' x 2'' (28 x 10 x 5 cm). Manfred Susunkewa is one of the most important late 20th-century Hopi katsina doll carvers, particularly associated with the revival of "Old Style" katsina carving beginning in the 1960s–70s. He is from Second Mesa, Hopi Reservation, Arizona, and studied at Haskell Indian School, Santa Fe Indian School, the Institute of American Indian Arts, and the University of Arizona.

The highly abstracted tablita headdress with stepped architectural profile, the long cylindrical body, minimal facial features, and matte mineral-pigment palette are characteristic of older traditional carving styles from the 1930s-1950s period rather than later tourist-market carvings. His work appears regularly in the secondary Native American art market and through Southwestern galleries.

Pre-Columbian Moche Bichrome Stirrup Vessel, C. 100 BCE to 300 CE. In the form of a seated shaman holding a petite vessel on one shoulder. Crowned by a headdress resembling a split mushroom cap, the ancient figure presents a simian visage with huge ears, wide eyes, and a curved nose and extending lips as though morphing into a snout suggesting zoomorphic transformation. His dilated pupils and broad grin grant the figure with a slightly eerie presence, giving him a hypnotic appearance suggestive of hallucinogenic intoxication. His portly body is dressed in a loincloth with a tied necklace and arm bands as he props up both knees against his bulging belly. Size: 8.5'' x 5'' x 5.5'' (22 x 13 x 14 cm). Pre-Columbian Chavin / Moche Blackware Stirrup Vessel, Shaman With Olla, 100 BCE to 100 CE. In the form of a shaman seated with knees propped up as he balances an olla on left shoulder. Turned slightly to his right, his captivating visage gazes hypnotically forward from wide eyes with bulging pupils - perhaps suggesting drug-induced dilation - above a pointed nose and full lips held slightly agape, also suggesting hallucinogenic influence. His fascinating, phytomorphic headdress sits just above his sizable ears, which are adorned with annular earspools, while a slender braid of hair falls down his curved back. Pre-Columbian Chavin Tembladera Pottery Vessel With Acrobat, C. 1200 to 1000 BCE. A hand-built pottery vessel with a flat base, a spherical, apple-shaped body, a rounded shoulder, and a squat spout. A bridge handle arches between the spout and an upside-down acrobat figure, hands splayed out beneath their body to aid in their balance, and with incised striations delineating the arms and legs from the body. Incised across the vessel's body are two abstract zoomorphic faces - each with a wide mouth and a huge, rectangular eye - all accentuated with rubbed cinnabar pigment. Size: 6.5'' x 6'' (17 x 15 cm). Pre-Columbian Veracruz (Vera Cruz), ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-carved stone ball game yoke exhibiting delicate, faint hues of green, gray, cream, periwinkle, and tan. The front of the U-shaped accessory features a pair of raptorial birds in confrontation, their beaks and furrowed brows touching one another, while the exterior of each arm bears either 2 or 3 large excised slots meant to accommodate form-fitting inlays of shell or stone. This yoke is far too cumbersome and heavy to have been used during active play; instead wooden yokes or belts comprised of basketry were probably worn as they were far more practical. A spectacular and large greenstone ornament inlaid with turquoise, the two large pieces perhaps one forming a disc for an earspool. Along the lower terminal tips are arched lines etched into the surface that represent human teeth, perhaps these ear flares resembled human skulls or jaws and it is possible the teeth are representing those of "The Old God." There are 2 hand-drilled perforations next to each other for securing the spool in place. Pre-Columbian Rare Olmec Palette / Mirror, Toad-Shaman Form, C. 1150 to 500 BCE. An incredibly rare earthenware amphibian creature with hematite eyes, the body inlaid with a flat greenstone that may have been a palette, and the other side is inlaid with a rough limestone. We highly suspect that the stomach was used as a mirror based on research and museum collections - pyrite and anthracite were often used as mirrors in Pre-Columbian cultures, and limestone, which this tested as, is a common host for pyrite veins. The greenstone palette surface was perhaps for mixing cosmetics or face paint. The molded pottery holding these stones in place, has slender limbs tucked into the sides like a crouching frog / toad, although the face is quite anthropomorphic, and perhaps symbolizes a human to animal transformation. The bird perches on the top of the cylindrical piece that the sword tang inserted into, the bird's head pointing between its legs to preen the chest feathers. Antique Ilongot Tribe, Northern Luzon, Philippines, Late 19th Century. This remarkable warrior's headdress is made from the skull of a hornbill that has been fastened on to a wicker and wood framework. It is further decorated with beads, shell, and metal. Mounted on an antique anthropomorphic wood head. The hornbill had religious significance among island groups in both Borneo and the Philippines. Among the Ilongot of the northern Luzon, a headdress like this would have been worn by a warrior who had taken an enemy head. Exceptional contemporary Hawaiian carved and dyed ipu gourd vessel by noted Hawaiian gourd artist Michael Harburg, executed in the traditional Ni'ihau method. Size: 24'' x 9'' (61 x 23 cm). The large natural bottle gourd features an elegant hand-carved bamboo grove motif with rich sienna and olive coloration created through the labor-intensive internal dyeing process associated with historic Hawaiian gourd decoration traditions. Harburg is recognized for helping revive and preserve the rare Niʻihau carving and dyeing technique rediscovered in the late 20th century. His works have been exhibited in Hawai‘i and are sought after by collectors of Oceanic, Polynesian, and Hawaiian cultural arts. The elongated form is surmounted by a carved stopper finial and displays excellent organic surface character throughout. Family of Dressed Fon Hovi Sacred Dolls, Benin Stands included. Carved wood figures with trade cloth vestments. This rare set of an apparently complete set of hovi were imported into the US by Beninoise dealer Ali Seidou in the late 1990's. Hovi serve a similar function within traditional Fon communities to ibejis among the neighboring Yoruba. Hovi are more typically found as singles and pairs. In addition to being lovingly adorned in vintage fabric vestments with drawstring closures, the figures show evidence of many years of handling and ritual washing.
