Exceptional contemporary Hawaiian carved and dyed ipu gourd vessel by noted Hawaiian gourd artist Michael Harburg, executed in the traditional Ni'ihau method. Size: 24'' x 9'' (61 x 23 cm). The large natural bottle gourd features an elegant hand-carved bamboo grove motif with rich sienna and olive coloration created through the labor-intensive internal dyeing process associated with historic Hawaiian gourd decoration traditions. Harburg is recognized for helping revive and preserve the rare Niʻihau carving and dyeing technique rediscovered in the late 20th century. His works have been exhibited in Hawai‘i and are sought after by collectors of Oceanic, Polynesian, and Hawaiian cultural arts. The elongated form is surmounted by a carved stopper finial and displays excellent organic surface character throughout. A strong decorative and ethnographic example of contemporary Hawaiian folk art and traditional ipu craftsmanship. Signed: Michael Harburg Provenance: Bishop Museum Honolulu Old Hawaii- Kula-Maui Collection
