This fabulous Gendje weaving displays an ornate accomplished detailed composition and is enhanced by the presence of a very unusual border design and equally unusual guard borders. The abrashed blue field with two central red flower heads supported by a variety of stylised flora forms between characteristic ivory rectilinear serrated split palmettes flanked by stepped flower heads, within an ivory serrated leaf and calyx border. The distinctive ivory rectilinear serrated edged split palmettes as seen in this rug forming the 'Afshan' pattern maintain a zoomorphic characteristic. This motif seems related to motifs seen in certain so-called 'Shield Group' carpets attributed to Shirvan, specifically those seen in the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, the Brooklyn Museum and the Gilbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, (Robert Pinner and Michael Franses, HALI, Vol 1, no. 1, pp. 19-20, figs, 23, 24, 25.). Lot: 16 - FACHRALO KAZAK PRAYER RUG, CIRCA 1880

The brick red field with a hooked ivory square medallion, hooked blue spandrels, supported by assorted flower heads below a flattened pointed arch, red flower head spandrels, a blue border enclosing hooked linked arrow heads, serrated red and yellow guard borders. This fine Fachralo rug appears to be from a specific group within the Fachralo weavings, defined by the field composition with a central square and the formal arrangement of the supporting elements. An earlier example with similar field arrangement, and different border circa 1863 sold at Skinner Marlborough 21-29 October 2020, lot 1145. The later examples apply an arrow head border arrangement as seen in this example. Lot: 18 - UNUSUAL SHIRVAN PRAYER RUG, CIRCA 1880

The ivory mihrab with diagonal polychrome striped canes, below a pointed arch, similar striped spandrels, within a dark blue border enclosing a continuous running dart border, a pale blue flower head and 'x' border. This unusual Shirvan prayer rug displays a very striking unique design. The diagonal cane multi coloured banding design is a frequently encountered pattern in Caucasian Gendje rugs though not exclusive to that attribution. For examples, see, Bennett, I. Oriental Rugs, Vol 1, Caucasian, 1981, pl's. 169-172. pp. 150-151. As can be seen in these examples, the diagonal bands extend the full width of the rug, however in this example the canes are foreshortened and sit floating on the ivory ground, representing an extraordinary interpretation of the established format. Furthermore, the inclusion of a single unrepeated yellow cane is also very unusual, which seems to act as an intentional focal point since it is placed in the middle of the field. Whether intentional or otherwise, its presence certainly attracts attention. The running dart border design is also an unusual feature, since this style of design is normally seen in flat woven Caucasian soumak weavings, presented in horizontal bands on khorjins or mafrash for instance. Lot: 30 - FINE MARASALI PRAYER RUG, DATED AH 1312/AD 1894

The golden saffron mihrab with allover chevron banded plants within a serrated linked leaf lattice below a pointed arch, similar saffron spandrels bearing mirrored numerical tiles, within an ivory border and arch enclosing continuous linked stepped and hooked birds linked by rectilinear vines. The so called Marasali prayer rugs form an important identifiable group of Caucasian weavings, thought to have been woven in and around the village of Maraza in the Shemakha district of Azerbaijan since at least 1800. The group can be subdivided into two distinct groups defined by pattern details; the 'flaming' boteh type predominantly woven on black grounds and the floral lattice type characteristically woven on ivory or golden yellow grounds, of which this a fine example. The chevron banding in the field is typically seen and the block of central ivory plants is also characteristic. In this example seen as a block of four white flower headed plants.
