The Qianqing Palace was the first of the Three Rear Halls, formerly contained the sleeping chambers of Ming emperors. During the Qing dynasty, however, emperors began to manage state affairs from the Qianqing Palace. The Palace was eventually turned into a formal living room and offices where emperors summoned subordinates for consultation, received foreign envoys, as well as gave banquets for family members, relatives and high officials (see Wan-go Weng and Yang Boda, The Palace Museum: Peking, Treasures of the Forbidden City, 1982, p. 50). Lot: 102 - Extremely Rare Chinese Wanli Dragon 'Kesi' Robe Fragment, Ming Dynasty, Wanli Period (1572-1620),
Extremely Rare Chinese Wanli Dragon 'Kesi' Robe Fragment, Ming Dynasty. Wanli Period (1572-1620), Size: 1'8'' x 4'2'' (51 x 127 cm). Provenance: Lisbet Holmes, London, before 1996; Jacqueline Simcox, London; Alan Brandt, London, purchased in 2008. This robe was either given by the Emperor Wanli to a member of Emperorâs family or other some high ranking official as a reward for particularly meritorious service. In order for the recipient to be able to appear at court in such a robe he would have to remove one of the claws from each of the feet of the dragon so as not to usurp imperial prerogatives and face severe punishment. One can see that this has been done; one claw on each foot of the dragon has been removed by reweaving it to the same color as the background of the robe. The drawing of this robe is particularly strong, vigorous, and forceful and epitomizes certain aesthetic features peculiar to Ming art: 1. the drawing of the images on the robe is angular, irregular and forceful. It has none of the smooth, graceful character of drawing found on imperial Yuan and Qing textiles; 2. only a limited number of strong, intense, highly saturated colors are employed -- red, green, blue, yellow, for the images represented; all float on a deep tobacco colored ground; 3. These intense colors are strongly juxtaposed to one another ( often in very close proximity ) e.g. in the cloud forms, the dragon's mane, and the band running under the dragon's belly; 4. the juxtaposition of intense, contrasting colors, together with the style of drawing and the overall composition, produce an effect of great graphic clarity and force. This graphic clarity is accentuated by the crisp, sharp boundaries produced by âKesiâ technique. All of the preceding element of style, the drawing, the color selection and juxtaposition and the weaving technique, united to produce an effect of overwhelming boldness, clarity, energy, force, and power.

Lot: 105 - An Imperial Yellow Satin Brocade Tibetan-Style 'Dragon Robe' Robe (Chuba) Qing Dynasty, Kangxi Period
An Imperial Yellow Satin Brocade Tibetan-Style 'Dragon Robe' Robe (Chuba) Qing Dynasty, Kangxi Period. Size: 7'0'' x 3'10'' (213 x 117 cm). Brocade silk with squirrel fur interior lining. Provenance: Sotheby's, Important Chinese Art, New York, September 15, 2015, Lot 215. Catalogue Note: During the Qing dynasty, the imperial court patronized Tibetan Buddhism as a way to consolidate their control over their vast empire. The Qing emperors sent lavish gifts to major Tibetan monasteries and leading monks and teachers. As Tibet did not produce silk, the Tibetans particularly welcomed gifts of luxurious silk textiles from China. The yellow color of the present lot indicates that the material was originally made for the imperial court. The dragon robe was probably a gift from the Qing court to a Buddhist monastery, where it was re-cut and turned into a chuba. The style of the dragons with their long narrow snouts, wide open mouths, knobby heads and round eyes below pointed eyebrows, indicate a 17th century date. It is rare to find an interconnected cloud ground as seen on the present lot, but an embroidered example of a Kangxi period dragon robe with a similar design of dragons superimposed on interconnected clouds was sold at Christie's London, 9th November 2010, lot 276.
