Extremely Rare Chinese Wanli Dragon 'Kesi' 缂丝 Robe Fragment, Ming Dynasty. Wanli Period (1572-1620) 明代万历, Size: 1'8'' x 4'2'' (51 x 127 cm). Provenance: Lisbet Holmes, London, before 1996; Jacqueline Simcox, London; Alan Brandt, London, purchased in 2008. This robe was either given by the Emperor Wanli to a member of Emperor’s family or other some high ranking official as a reward for particularly meritorious service. In order for the recipient to be able to appear at court in such a robe he would have to remove one of the claws from each of the feet of the dragon so as not to usurp imperial prerogatives and face severe punishment. One can see that this has been done; one claw on each foot of the dragon has been removed by reweaving it to the same color as the background of the robe. The drawing of this robe is particularly strong, vigorous, and forceful and epitomizes certain aesthetic features peculiar to Ming art: 1. the drawing of the images on the robe is angular, irregular and forceful. It has none of the smooth, graceful character of drawing found on imperial Yuan and Qing textiles; 2. only a limited number of strong, intense, highly saturated colors are employed -- red, green, blue, yellow, for the images represented; all float on a deep tobacco colored ground; 3. These intense colors are strongly juxtaposed to one another ( often in very close proximity ) e.g. in the cloud forms, the dragon's mane, and the band running under the dragon's belly; 4. the juxtaposition of intense, contrasting colors, together with the style of drawing and the overall composition, produce an effect of great graphic clarity and force. This graphic clarity is accentuated by the crisp, sharp boundaries produced by ‘Kesi’ technique. All of the preceding element of style, the drawing, the color selection and juxtaposition and the weaving technique, united to produce an effect of overwhelming boldness, clarity, energy, force, and power.
