ZOLTAN HECHT
Hungarian / American, 1890-1968

Watercolor
Landscape depicting a tranquil harbor scene, with a small cluster of white clapboard houses nestled among dense evergreen trees on the far shore. The foreground features a rocky embankment. An inscription appears in the lower right corner. Artist signed and dated. Framed. Not examined out of frame.

  • Provenance: ARTIST PROFILE: Zoltan Hecht (Hungarian/American, 1890–1968) emigrated to the United States at age 12, settling with his family in Cleveland, Ohio, where he studied at the Cleveland School of Art before moving to New York in 1913. He and his wife Rosa Hecht co-founded the New Age Association, which included the School for the New Age in Saluda, North Carolina (1924–1931), an institution devoted to training students in the crafts and producing the well-regarded "New Age" hooked rugs designed in collaboration with artists such as Ilonka Karasz and Hugo Gellert. Working across painting, watercolor, pastel, and mixed-media collage, Hecht received critical attention during his lifetime—including a 1943 solo watercolor exhibition at the Acquavella Galleries in New York—and his work was posthumously honored with a 1981 retrospective at Passaic County Community College in New Jersey.
  • Dimensions: Sight (as matted): 14.5 x 20.5 inches; frame: 26 x 32 inches
  • Medium: Watercolor
