c. 1848 Zachary Taylor Presidential Campaign Papier-Mache Snuff Box, 3.25" Diameter, Black on Gold Engraved Portrait, Inscribed "Old Rough and Ready, The Hero of the War with Mexico, Genl. Zachs. Taylor," Choice Very Fine.
This Presidential Campaign Snuff Box measures 3.25" in diameter and is fabricated in papier-mache, the fashionable material of choice for decorative snuff boxes throughout the first half of the nineteenth century, with a jet black lacquered exterior rim and a richly printed lid face. The lid bears a finely executed engraved-style portrait of Taylor printed in deep black ink on a warm burnished gold ground, depicting the General in right-facing profile bust view wearing a double-breasted civilian coat with visible button detail, his curly hair and strong features rendered with considerable skill and clarity.
Inscriptions arc located around the Portrait field: "Old Rough and Ready" to the left, "The Hero of the War with Mexico" to the right, and "Genl. Zachs. Taylor" in a prominent cartouche banner along the lower edge of the portrait. A small engraver's or publisher's initial mark is visible at the very base of the portrait. The gold ground shows light overall crazing and fine surface scratching consistent with approximately 175 years of age, giving the piece an attractive antique character while not detracting from the sharpness and legibility of the portrait and inscriptions. The two halves of the box fit tightly together and have not been separated. There is no evidence of prior repairs, damage, or restoration of any kind, being a notably uncommon circumstance for papier-mache boxes of this period.
ZACHARY TAYLOR (1784-1850), the 12th President of the United States, rose to national fame through his commanding performances during the Mexican-American War of 1846 to 1848, most notably his decisive victories at the Battles of Palo Alto, Resaca de la Palma, and Buena Vista.
His folksy nickname "Old Rough and Ready" earned during decades of frontier military service, became the centerpiece of his 1848 Whig Party Presidential Campaign. His image was reproduced on a variety of campaign items during that election season, being among the earliest and most vigorous outpourings of American political merchandising.
Taylor won the presidency in November 1848 but died in office in July 1850 after only sixteen months as President, making surviving campaign items from his 1848 run historically significant and increasingly sought after by collectors of Presidential Americana.
