After the Comics Code killed EC's entire line except for Kurtzman's MAD, editor Al Feldstein was out of a job. Atlas editor Stan Lee recognized Al's talent and brought him on board, and Feldstein handled a few scripts for Lee until Bill Gaines rehired him to edit MAD after Kurtzman left. Feldstein's brief Atlas gig found him writing the debut of a Fu Manchu knock-off called the Yellow Claw. Feldstein's portrayal of the Yellow Claw's nemesis, Asian-American Secret Agent Jimmy Woo, would result in the writer's sole Marvel Cinemetic Universe credit thanks to Woo's appearance in 2009's "Ant-Man and the Wasp."

"He did some Yellow Claw scripts for Stan Lee at Atlas Comics... but after all his successes at E.C. he hated going back to the freelance world. Of this period, Feldstein said 'I typed up the script and I brought it in and got paid whatever it was, seven dollars a page or some ridiculous thing. I said, 'God, what am I doing?'" Grant Geissman, Feldstein: The MAD Life and Fantastic Art of Al Feldstein. IDW: 2013, p. 311.

"At loose ends as EC dissolved into basically just MAD magazine, [Feldstein] took the Atlas scripting assignment and ran with it, getting his Fu Manchu clone off to a strong start, storywise." — Roy Thomas, Atlas Era Marvel Masterworks: Black Knight Nos. 1-5 & The Yellow Claw Nos. 1-4. Marvel: 2009, p. viii.
