YAYOI KUSAMA (B. 1929), PUMPKIN, LIMITED EDITION SCREENPRINT

Provenance and Authenticity:

This work is presented as a limited edition print in the manner and style associated with Yayoi Kusama, one of the most influential contemporary Japanese artists. The composition features the artist's iconic pumpkin motif, characterized by repeated patterns, organic forms, and her signature polka-dot language. The work bears a handwritten signature and edition notation along the lower margin, consistent with the presentation of Kusama's signed graphic works.

Signature:

Yayoi Kusama

Description:

The composition depicts Kusama's celebrated pumpkin form rendered against a deep black ground, covered entirely with her distinctive network of yellow dots and organic patterning. The repeated circular motifs create a hypnotic visual rhythm, transforming the simple vegetable form into a powerful symbol of infinity, repetition, and personal expression. The contrast between the luminous yellow pumpkin and the dark patterned background produces a striking optical effect, reflecting Kusama's lifelong exploration of accumulation, perception, and immersive visual experience. The carefully balanced symmetry and intricate surface treatment demonstrate the graphic precision that has made her pumpkin imagery among her most recognizable and sought-after artistic symbols.

Historical significance:

Yayoi Kusama is regarded as one of the most important contemporary artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Her pioneering use of repetition, polka dots, and immersive environments has influenced generations of artists and established her as a central figure in contemporary Pop Art and avant-garde practice. The pumpkin motif, first developed from her personal visual language in the late twentieth century, has become one of the most recognizable icons in modern contemporary art.

Valuation:

Signed and editioned works featuring Kusama's iconic pumpkin imagery remain highly desirable among international collectors, particularly examples with strong provenance, clear signatures, and classic compositions. Her graphic works continue to attract broad interest due to their accessibility, recognizable imagery, and connection to one of the most influential artistic careers of the contemporary era.
