World War II U.S. Colt Model 1911A1 Semi-Automatic Pistol with Sweetheart Grips Attributed to Brigadier General Guy Drewry Manufactured by Colt in 1943. The slide has the two-line, two-block markings divided by the Rampant Colt on the left side, "GHD" (Brig. General Guy H. Drewry) inspected frame, "8/VP" and "35" on the trigger guard, wide checkered hammer, serrated mainspring housing and unmarked full blue magazine. The pistol is fitted with clear Plexiglas sweetheart grips featuring purported images of Louise Northington, wife of Brigadier General Guy Drewry (1894-1973). The accompanying letter from the Veterans Memorial Museum (Branson, MO) Curator Frederick Hoppe states the pistol was purchased by Randy Archer from a former doctor of General Drewry, and the grips use the image of Drewry's wife. The museum bought the pistol from Acher in 2003. While on assignment at the Springfield Armory then Major Drewry worked closely with John Garand in developing the famed M1 rifle, which became the standard issue rifle for American troops for a quarter of a century. He served as Deputy and later Chief of the Small Arms Division, Office Chief of Ordnance, playing a critical role in the development, production and procurement of small arms and ammunition and the development of the M1 carbine during WWII. As Chief of Ordnance during WWII, he procured $2 million worth of munitions. He was appointed a Brigadier General in 1941 and retired from the Army in 1946. Comes with a reproduction Kraft box, lanyard, extra magazine and a set of checkered plastic grips.
