The General Assault Badge (Allgemeines Sturmabzeichen) was awarded to Army, Waffen-SS and Ordnungspolizei personnel who supported an infantry attack in three separate assaults but did not qualify for the Infantry Assault Badge. It is constructed out of a die struck zinc base that has been silver washed with about 85% of the finish remaining. The obverse depicts a closed winged eagle, clutching a mobile swastika within its talons, above a crossed model 24 grenade and K98 bayonet. This is then all surrounded by an oak leaf and acorn wreath. The full back reverse is maker marked "R.S." (Rudolf Souval, Wien). It also shows a soldered on round plate round wire catch, soldered on sheet metal hinge and round wire pin. It retains great detai. Excellent. The General Assault Badge (Allgemeines Sturmabzeichen) was instituted by Generalfeldmarschall Walther von Brauchitsch on June 1, 1940, to recognize infantry and motorized infantry soldiers (including Panzergrenadiere) who had repeatedly participated in close-combat assaults but who were not eligible for the Infantry Assault Badge (because they lacked pure infantry training) or the Panzer Badge (because they fought primarily on foot rather than in armored vehicles). It was awarded to members of the Heer and Waffen-SS who, on January 1, 1940, had taken part in three separate infantry assaults on three different days, each involving hand-to-hand or close-quarters combat with the enemy. It was designed by the artist Wilhelm Ernst Peekhaus in Berlin. A higher-grade General Assault Badge with numeral (Sturmabzeichen mit Einsatzzahl), was introduced on June 22, 1943, for 25, 50, 75, or 100 qualifying assaults. It was worn on the left breast pocket, below the Iron Cross 1st Class or equivalent decoration.
