World War II U.S. Remington-Rand Model 1911A1 Semi-Automatic Pistol Attributed to U.S. Navy Lieutenant Guido Capponi with Identification Tags and Cards and Documentation Manufactured in 1943, this Remington-Rand Model 1911A1 pistol is attributed as carried during World War II by U.S. Navy Lieutenant Guido Capponi. The pistol itself is typical of 1943 production with standard markings including the "FJA" inspection marking on the right of the frame as well as standard features. The blued barrel is marked "AC2" on the lower left and "S P" on the left of the lug. It is fitted with Keyes Fibre grips and a "G" marked full-blue magazine. An included copy of Capponi's Notice of Separation from the navy notes that he served from 26 August 1942 until 23 May 1946 primarily with the U.S. 7th Fleet in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Teton (AGC 14) and the USS Estes (AGC 12), both amphibious force command ships, as well as a "Laison-Tokyo". An included written statement from Capponi's daughter notes that he was involved with providing intelligence that was used to decide which islands would be attacked and which would be passed by during the American "Island Hopping" campaign in the Pacific, and that he was present on the USS Missouri for the Japanese surrender ceremony. The USS Teton is noted as having been present in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945 for the Japanese surrender. The statement also notes that Capponi was awarded a medal by Chiang Kai-shek, and an Order of the Cloud and Banner 7th Class is included. After his time in the navy, Capponi went on to become a Fulbright scholar, receiving degrees from the University of Wisconsin, including a doctorate in Italian Literature and the Humanities and a Masters in Italian. He was involved in the development of teaching foreign languages during the early stages of the Peace Corps and developed the Italian Department at the University of Arizona where he became a professor. Also included are five identification tags for Capponi, a copy of "Watch Officer's Guide" from the U.S. Naval Institute, two armed forces identification cards for Capponi, a Rodana wristwatch without the band, a Chicago Line Veterans Association pin, an Italian Order of Merit medal (connection unknown), a reproduction U.S. leather holster, and an extra commercial magazine.
