"28 chapters of non-fiction tales retelling the history of shipping and shipbuilding connected with early Portland, Maine. The year 1816 pioneered the steamboat economy and soon Maine waters saw odd-looking contraptions that puffed, panted and clattered in the seas until that time owned by sailing ships. Through years of trial and error these "interlopers" evolved into the great fleets of hallowed memory. Sail, however, did not give in easily. It battled for survival with new designs and rigs, well into the Twentieth Century. It was an epic conflict between the old and the new, with frequent truces and finally attempts at coexistence between the age of Clipper Ships and the men & women that sailed in them."
