Late Production Winchester Model 90 Slide Action Takedown Rifle with Rare .22 WRF Round Barrel Receiver manufactured in 1928. The rifle features a rare round barrel. The barrel, which correctly measures 23 inches in length, is the same type of barrel Winchester used on the Model 62, and according to Winchester sliding rifle expert and author Ned Schwing, original factory built Model 90s with a round barrel first appeared no earlier than around the time the Model 62 was introduced in 1932. Round barreled Model 90s manufactured prior to 1932 (serial numbers under 747266) would have had the round barrel fitted at the factory as a replacement barrel or by an outside gunsmith. The barrel lacks the Winchester mail order replacement "P" proof. Note the rifle also has a grooved trigger, which is seen on Model 90s after 1938, and a grooved hammer, which Winchester began using on the Model 90 production line starting after 1944. With a serial number that falls into a 1928 dated production range and several features not seen until at least 1932 or later, makes it highly plausible that this rifle was manufactured at the factory with a supply of clean-up parts. The rifle falls in the serial number application date only range and therefore will not letter. The rifle features dovetail front and elevation adjustable sights, a Winchester factory oval proof on the barrel and receiver at the breech, "W.R.F. 24" marked on the front of the frame and the Winchester legend followed by "-MODEL 90-/-22 W.R.F.-" marked on the left side of the barrel. Mounted on a checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with a crescent buttplate. The left side of the lower tang is marked "296," and the butt of the stock is marked "90/296." Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 90 BBL: 23 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 22 WRF Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 717315 Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun Condition: Very fine. The rifle retains 90% original blue finish with the balance a mixture of smooth brown and gray patinas. There is a small patch of minor pitting on the barrel. The wood is fine with showing checkering and an old coat of varnish. Mechanically excellent.
