Exceptional Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine with Factory Letter The serial number falls at the end of the 1896 range in the available factory date, but the factory letter confirms that this carbine was not serial numbered until June 27, 1900. It was received in the warehouse on August 17, 1900, and shipped on August 20 as a standard .44 caliber carbine in order 68479. The carbine has a 20-inch round barrel and full-length magazine. The second style barrel band is located ahead of the front sight. The barrel has a block mounted front sight with nickel-silver blade and folding leaf rear sight graduated to "9". A staple mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped for a receiver sight. The barrel, magazine, barrel bands, receiver, and bolt have the Winchester charcoal blue finish. The extractor, loading gate cover, and trigger are a fiery niter blue. The carbine style buttplate has a dull blue finish. The hammer and lever are casehardened with vivid case colors. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation: "44 W.C.F." is roll-stamped between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper tang is marked: "MODEL 1892./-WINCHESTER-/PAT. OCT. 14.1884" in three lines. The serial number is roll-stamped across the bottom of the receiver. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1892-Carbine BBL: 20 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 44-40 WCF Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 144908 Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun Condition: Excellent plus. The barrel, magazine, and barrel bands retain 98% plus of the original blue finish with minimal handling wear. The Winchester legend and caliber markings are extremely sharp. The bolt has nearly all of the blue finish, and at least 98% of the fire blue finish is present on the extractor, loading gate and trigger. The receiver retains 97% of the original blue finish. Wear is limited to several minor scratches and some very slight thinning on the bottom near the serial number. The left side of the receiver has traces of scuff marks from contact with the saddle ring. The buttplate retains at 95% of the dull blue finish with some minor finish loss on the heel. The hammer and lever retain nearly 99% of the vivid case colors. The stock and forearm are both excellent plus and have nearly all of the original oil finish. This is an extraordinary example of an early Winchester Model 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine that would be difficult, if not impossible, to improve upon.
