Scarce Early Production Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Sporting Rifle in Desirable .45-70 Serial Number 1306 This Model 1885 was manufactured in the second year of production, 1886. The '85 was the first Winchester firearm based on a John Moses Browning patent and was widely successful. It was also the first Winchester capable of handling the .45-70 cartridge that was widely popular for hunting bison on the plains. The simple, reliable, and durable action proved especially popular with target shooters and hunters. This example has the early style flat side frame with no step on the sides. It also has a knife blade front sight, adjustable "U" notch sporting rear sight, tapped upper tang for mounting a peep sight, a plain trigger, smooth stock and forearm, and standard markings. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1885-Rifle BBL: 30 inch octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 45-70 Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 1306 Class: Antique Condition: Very good plus. 20% of the faded original blue finish and traces of original silvered out case colors remain. The action is mechanically excellent, and the markings are crisp.
